Manipulation of the microbiome, specifically that of the bowels (soon oral, skin, vaginal to be added), is proving to be an enormously powerful strategy for health, weight loss, and aging. We have been discussing, for example, how supplementing a specific strain of Lactobacillus reuteri, strain ATCC PTA 6475, with counts (CFUs) amplified by fermenting yogurt in the presence of prebiotic fiber, is yielding extravagant health effects: thicker, smoother skin; accelerated healing; complete shut-down of appetite; increased energy; accelerated recovery from exercise; weight loss; among other effects.
In future, our understanding of such powerful species- and strain-specific benefits from cultivation of microbes is going to grow and, with it, our arsenal of powerful tools for health. We are going to be able to modify, even reverse, the course of conditions such as autoimmune diseases, Parkinsonism and other neurological impairments, common “diseases of lifestyle” such as hypertension and high cholesterol, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, obesity, and many other conditions all through various manipulations of the microbiome.
Beyond the wonderful benefits, what I love about this and other methods of manipulating the microbiome is that we can achieve this on our own without doctors, hospitals, prescription drugs, and at very little cost. It is the perfect Undoctored strategy because it puts enormous control in the hands of individuals. It also means that Big Pharma and the healthcare system are salivating at devising ways to perform their usual alchemy of converting a health issue into a revenue-generating procedure or product. You are therefore going to hear a lot about fecal transplant (a billable procedure), antibiotic “treatment” of dysbiosis, and other ways to mimic what can be accomplished naturally. The doctor will pooh-pooh your efforts, Big Pharma will use their usual deceptive marketing practices to persuade the public that their way is the real way (witness prescription fish oil, an absurd but billion-dollar-per-year idea marketed to the ignorant and unsuspecting), and doctors will find ways to bill you for thousands of procedural dollars to achieve what you can achieve—and better—on your own. Yes, what you can achieve is superior to what the doctor and healthcare system can achieve—but they won’t tell you that.
So be prepared: We are poised to achieve unprecedented and extraordinary power in health, but there is a battle ahead. Just as the moth-ridden, outdated, misinformed person called your doctor makes fun of people who have reversed their own type 2 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, so it will go when you make efforts to cultivate healthy bowel flora and deny him the opportunity for a fecal transplant or other revenue-generating opportunity.
