Be warned: I am really not fond of diving down the rabbit hole of the dark and dirty in modern healthcare, a corrupt and perverted industry. But I shall dive head-first into a dark area to describe where I fear modern healthcare is heading because this awful thing called American healthcare is unsustainable and most definitely does not provide health.
Observing the antics of Big Pharma, who has been rapidly escalating drug prices faster than ever, pricing drugs in widespread use into the $3000, $6000, even $60,000 per month range, you’ve got to wonder: How is this sustainable? Won’t it just topple this awful system of healthcare we have? What will Big Pharma do then when, say, 20 or 30% of Americans are bankrupt, the rest working their tails off to pay their $5000 per month healthcare insurance premiums? Will there be massive, wholesale rejection of the system?
Surely they see the writing on the wall.
Contemplating such uncomfortable issues while bombarded with commercial after commercial hawking Ozempic, Tresiba, and Humira, it struck me: Big Pharma already knows. They already know that such predatory pricing policies, selling drugs that are unsatisfactory, full of awful side-effects, and cripple people economically cannot last very long.
The people in Big Pharma are not stupid. They may be dishonest, greedy, predatory, and exploitative, but they are not stupid. The smell of billions of dollars, after all, appeals to many executives, scientists, and salespeople who want their piece of the pharmaceutical pie from a population persuaded that health can be found in a pill or injection.
I believe that smart people in Big Pharma already know that there are trends at work that threaten their business model. While they continue to develop blockers of various metabolic/inflammatory/hormonal pathways, many of us outside that world are coming to recognize the enormous health potential of such areas as:
- The power of diet—No, not the corrupt and ineffective diet given to you by the nice dietitian, doctor, or dietary guideline, but the diet that restores the way that humans lived for the first 3+ million years of our time on this planet, i.e., the diet to which we have adapted and is written into our genetic code. It means that all the “diseases of civilization” such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, constipation, diverticular disease, acne, psoriasis, and hundreds of others can be reversed simply by shifting food choices back to the foods that we are adapted to consuming, no grains or sugars, no low-fat, no calorie-counting.
- The power of correcting common nutritional deficiencies unique to the modern age—Because you are not fond of running naked or semi-naked in a tropical or sub-tropical sun and don’t like to consume the liver of the animals you kill, you need to supplement vitamin D. Because you don’t drink water from a running river or stream, but drink water filtered of contaminants but removes all magnesium, you need to supplement magnesium and obtain all the benefits of this nutrient with which we begin with cumulative deficiency. Addressing such common widespread deficiencies provides enormous health benefits because they address intrinsic needs written into your genetic code.
- The power of the microbiome—It is becoming clearer and clearer that hundreds of diseases are really manifestations of disrupted bowel flora. It means that correcting distortions of bowel flora is the real solution, not an injectable $5000-per-month drug to suppress symptoms while leading to liver failure and fungal infections. This means that Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, rosacea, and psoriatic arthritis are wonderfully responsive to targeted probiotics and related efforts and do not require the products of Big Pharma.
- The power of biochemical manipulation and toxin elimination—If you are genetically-prone to a folate deficiency because you have a genetically-programmed MTHFR variant, i.e., a common variant of the enzyme that handles folic acid/folate from foods, you are prone to depression, heart disease, and cancer. The solution is not antidepressants, statin drugs and anti-platelet agents, or chemotherapy. The solution is a form of folate that would have been present in some wild foods, methylfolate, that circumvents and negates this genetic variant. If exposure to cadmium, mercury, bisphenol A, and perflurooctanoic acid underlie kidney dysfunction or hypothyroidism, removal/detoxification of these compounds is the solution, not a drug to counteract some of the associated phenomena. The functional medicine community, in particular, has been championing this approach.
In other words, despite the efforts of Big Pharma to pick your pocket of every last penny you earn, they are also smart enough to recognize that the natural, safe, and inexpensive alternatives will disrupt their exploitative business model in coming decades. What should a desperate CEO, CFO, pharmaceutical scientist, or salesperson do to preserve their status quo? Squeeze every American for every last penny while the getting is good—because it won’t last forever, perhaps no more than another 20 or 30 years.
This lasts until it is no longer good and people remain sick and gullible with doctors who drink the Big Pharma Kool-Aid aiding and abetting their business model. And smart people in Big Pharma know this. My prediction: While it may take 10, 20, or 30 years, this is the last hurrah of an awful and dark period of American “healthcare,” an enormously expensive system that never provided health in the first place, but surely lined the pockets of healthcare insiders.
My advice: Opt out of this system before Big Pharma and other healthcare insiders manage to cash out at your expense. Your biggest protection: Become healthy and never need the healthcare system.
